SAN FRANCISCO (AP) —
Microsoft is offering free upgraded versions of its Office software for
iPhones and iPads, as the software giant further embraces the so-called
"freemium" strategy favored by many newer companies seeking success
online.

Give away a basic version of a popular service, and the
world may beat a path to your door and be willing to pay a little more
for extras, or so the thinking goes.

Microsoft, the longtime king
of desktop software, has generally protected its model of getting paid
upfront for what it developed. But as the company strives to stay
relevant for workers and consumers in an increasingly mobile world — and
better compete with Google, Apple and others — it is offering
substantial versions of its most popular products free of charge for
smartphones and tablets. Microsoft is hoping to keep people using its
products across all their devices, while betting that many will
ultimately pay for fuller-featured versions of the software.

"There's
going to be a handful of tech companies that everyone depends on," for
online software, said Maribel Lopez, a mobile tech analyst at Lopez
Research. "Microsoft wants to make sure they're one of them."

As
more workers use devices other than desktop PCs, they want to have the
same capabilities on all their devices, says Michael Atalla, director of
Microsoft's Office apps product management. "We want to make sure they
can move seamlessly from one to another," he added.

The apps
released Thursday, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, replace a
limited iPhone version and upgrade a more powerful set of apps that the
company released for iPad tablets in March. The older iPhone version
allowed users to create and view files for free, but had very limited
features. Earlier versions for the iPad offered more capabilities, but
creating new files required a paid subscription to the company's Office
365 subscription service.

The new apps have more of the
capabilities found in Office desktop software and don't require a paid
subscription for creating files and other functions. Microsoft is still
reserving some premium features, including security tools for business
users, for paid subscribers. Microsoft will continue to charge for
Office 365 on PCs and for business users.
Ltd, maker of high-end, all-aluminum computer chassis for over 12 years, today introduced a full-tower chassis, the PC-90. Available in striking black or silver hairline-brushed, anodized metal casing, the PC-90, also known as 'The Hammer', represents the best of Made-in-Taiwan ingenuity and quality, with the ease of tool-less design.

The Lian Li PC-90's unique internal layout allows large HPTX motherboards to be held in a standard, full-tower case with a weight of only 6.6kg. 'The Hammer' PC-90 is light and compact, and can easily fit under a desk like a standard PC chassis. This makes the chassis an excellent solution for systems/servers/workstations without needing a large, heavy steel case.

Instead of standard HDD cages that obstruct internal air-flow, the PC-90's HDD drives are mounted vertically on two trays inside the left side panel. This way, the entire back of the case can be used to hold the motherboard, even enabling a larger HPTX or server motherboard to fit into the standard, full-tower chassis.

The Lian Li PC-90 offers the advantage of two 140mm front fans blowing cool air directly and unrestricted over the motherboard and VGA card to the rear 120mm fan. Its sturdy HDD trays on the side of the case lock firmly into place in order to avoid vibration. Nonetheless, the trays can be easily removed via thumbscrew, allowing for easy installation of three 3.5” HDDs in the front and three more 2.5” drives on the back of the two trays, for a total of 12 HDD drives for the entire system. Thanks to the chassis design without HDD cages, 'The Hammer' supports video cards up to 400mm length and also offers a tool-less graphics card holder. To support modern motherboards and avoid having to use external connectors, the case is equipped with USB 3.0 for 20-pin connector.

Rounding out the Lian Li PC-90's superior features are its cable organization system and liquid cooling holes. Washable air filters offer easy-to-remove, and recyclable, computer protection.

(NASDAQGM: NTGR), a global networking company that delivers innovative products to consumers, businesses and service providers, today announced worldwide availability of the N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router – Premium Edition (WNDR3800), the first home router to offer Clear Channel Selector and the first to create private cloud file sharing through NETGEAR's new ReadySHARE™ Cloud service.

Clear Channel Selector, previously available only in more costly wireless routers for businesses, automatically detects when the WiFi channel currently in use becomes overcrowded and switches to another less-crowded channel. WiFi overcrowding is a growing problem as the number of WiFi access points proliferates and there's more competition for WiFi frequencies from household devices such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors and from neighbors. Clear Channel Selector creates a more reliable home WiFi network by greatly reducing sudden disconnects and slowdowns, especially important for demanding applications such as HD video streaming, multi-player gaming and online voice or video chats.

ReadySHARE Cloud (www.netgear.com/readyshare) transforms a USB hard drive or flash drive plugged into the USB port of the N600 Premium Edition into a private "cloud" storage system for securely accessing and sharing files within the home network or across the Internet. There's no need to go through the lengthy process of selecting a public file-sharing site and then uploading files, and no worries about privacy policies or what happens if the service suddenly goes out of business. Instead, ReadySHARE™ Cloud makes it easy to designate which files and folders on the USB drive can be shared. These shared files can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection, as well as through apps from NETGEAR for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android smartphones and Android tablets.

Installing and managing the N600 Premium Edition is a snap. There's no CD required for installation, and the router can be configured through a simple browser-based interface accessible on PCs, Macs, smartphones, the iPad and other tablets.

The N600 Premium Edition is NETGEAR's most feature-rich home router, built around a powerful 680 MHz processor backed by 16 MB of flash memory and 128 MB of RAM. Among the router's many advanced features are:

ReadySHARE Printer – USB printers plugged into the N600 Premium Edition can be accessed by any computer linked to the home network. There's no need to buy a new printer with built-in WiFi to print wirelessly.
NETGEAR Genie – a free computer software utility for monitoring, controlling and repairing the home network (available at http://www.netgear.com/genie).
NETGEAR Live Parental Controls – a centralized, flexible and reliable way for parents to control which web sites their children visit and what times of day they can go online, covering all devices on the network including Windows PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets.
Guest network – allows visitors to go online without having to be given the home network password and without gaining access to computers, printers, storage drives and other home-network devices.
DLNA – supports the DLNA standard for streaming media to DLNA-enabled HDTVs, Blu-ray™ players and game consoles.
Automatic Quality-of-Service (QoS) – provides the best possible viewing experience for Internet video by giving priority to video streams over other home network traffic.
Expanded TiVo storage – for TiVo owners, a USB drive connected to the router can serve as extra storage for TiVo video recordings.
Fast wireless – dual-band wireless-N for simultaneous speeds of up to 600 megabits per second, divided between the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
Fast wired connections – Four high-speed gigabit Ethernet ports.
Automatic WiFi security – the router comes out of the box with wireless security turned on, so home WiFi networks are protected by default.
Open platform – do-it-yourself tech enthusiasts can tweak performance and features by installing open source firmware and joining the open router community at www.myopenrouter.com.

"The N600 Premium Edition brings a new level of sophistication to home networks," said Som Pal Choudhury, NETGEAR director of product marketing. "The unprecedented feature set of this advanced router makes wireless connections more reliable, breaks down the barriers to file-sharing in the cloud and much more – yet it's easy to set up and manage. This is the future of home networking, and it's here today."

Pricing and Availability

The NETGEAR N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router – Premium Edition (WNDR3800) is now available worldwide from major retailers – in stores and online – at $179.99 in the United States. The ReadySHARE Cloud apps for iOS and Android devices are also available now at $2.99.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24577524.post-57402676290718255382011-08-28T08:24:00.000-07:002011-08-28T08:25:49.952-07:00China official tells Web firms to control contentBEIJING (AP) — A Communist Party leader has told China's Internet companies to tighten control over material online as Beijing cracks down on dissent and tries to block the rise of Middle East-style protests.

The party secretary for Beijing, Liu Qi, issued the warning following a visit this week to Sina Corp., which operates a popular microblogging site, according to the party-published newspaper Beijing Daily.

Internet companies should "strengthen management and firmly prevent the spread of fake and harmful information," Liu was quoted as saying after the visit Monday to Sina. He said companies should "resist fake and negative information."

Communist authorities encourage Internet use for education and business but are uneasy about its potential to spread dissent, especially after social networking and other websites played a key role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

Beijing is in the midst of one of its most sweeping crackdowns on dissent in years and has detained or questioned hundreds of activists, lawyers and others.

The government tries to block access to foreign websites deemed subversive and Chinese operators of websites where the public can post comments are required to watch the material and remove any that violates censorship rules.

The government's censorship rules prompted Google Inc. to close its China search engine last year. Mainland users can see Google's Chinese-language search site in Hong Kong but access is slower and the company's China market share has shrunk.

The report on Liu's warning gave no details of how Internet companies were expected to change their management.

Employees who answered the phone at Sina referred questions to a spokeswoman who did not answer her phone.

With Liu during the visit were Sina CEO Charles Chao and Kai-fu Lee, a former boss of Google's China unit who runs a technology investment company, according to the Beijing Daily.

Chao told Forbes magazine in March that Sina's microblogging site, Weibo, has at least 100 employees monitoring content 24 hours a day. The company said in May that the number of Weibo users had passed 140 million.

Also this week, the Beijing Internet Media Association, a government-sanctioned industry group, called on its 104 member companies to police Internet content, possibly prompted by Liu's order.

"Propaganda guidance to the public should be led toward a correct direction," the appeal said, according to the Beijing Daily. "Online news should be trustworthy and should not spread rumors or vulgar contents."

Liu, the party secretary, also visited the headquarters of Youku.com Inc., a video portal, and talked with CEO Victor Koo, the report said.

China has the world's biggest online population, with 485 million Internet users as of June 30, according to the government-sanctioned China National Internet Information Center.

Meanwhile, a major Chinese Internet commerce platform, Taobao, has told merchants that use its service to stop selling virtual private network and other software that allows Web surfers to avoid government filters.

Taobao, part of Alibaba Group, said it acted after finding VPNs were being used to visit foreign websites illegally. A company spokesman said Tuesday it took the action on its own without receiving government orders.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24577524.post-41233999684044498682011-08-26T21:29:00.000-07:002011-08-26T21:30:19.595-07:00Facebook kills off Groupon competitorSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook is ending its Deals program, which offered the site's 750 million users discounts similar to those offered by daily deals site Groupon.

Facebook said in a statement Friday it decided to end Deals after four months of testing. The service will wind down in coming weeks. It was available only in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco.

Facebook says it remains committed to serving local businesses through ads, pages and other products. And it will continue to offer "check-in deals." These lets businesses like restaurants and stores offer deals to customers who "check in" through Facebook to let their friends know where they are.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24577524.post-12224273049331200892011-08-17T10:53:00.000-07:002011-08-17T10:54:44.250-07:00Lian Li Launches HTPC PC-V353 and Mini-Tower PC-Q25Keelung, Taiwan – Lian Li Industrial Co. Ltd, maker of high-end, all-aluminum computer chassis for over 13 years, is proud to announce the release of two new PC cases: the HTPC PC-V353 and Mini-Tower PC-Q25. A new edition to Lian Li's HTPC chassis series, the PC-V353 features a handsome front mesh design and is available in eye-catching black or silver. The aluminum-front mini-tower PC-Q25 offers a contemporary design that lends itself to any professional or home environment, and is available in black and silver colors. Both of these models offer impressive engineering, the convenience of tool-free installation, and excellent air-flow.

PC-V353
Boasting the ability to accept Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX motherboards, this HTPC chassis also allows energy-saving and quiet, fan-free operation. The entire chassis is geared towards users wanting a noise-free, passively cooling system, but users still have a choice to install their own fans for active airflow, if desired. In addition to four ventilated PCI slots, the front-panel mesh cover forms a clever ventilation system with excellent cool air flow. Hot air also leaves the frame through the top using the chassis's unique “thermal flow” top.

The side panel is screw-less and the sliding motherboard tray is another tool-free convenience, as are the removable HDD racks. Internally, the PC-V353 supports two 3.5” and two 2.5” HDDs, and there is enough room for a 300mm video card.

On the front panel, Lian Li has provided easy access to the power switch along with two USB 3.0 ports, one e-SATA port, as well as HD Audio ports. The PC-V353's dimensions are 288mm x 286 mm x 397mm (W, H, D) and its net weight is 4.13kg.

PC-Q25
The PC-Q25 is a compact, mini-tower case that, despite its size, can actually hold up to seven HDDs, allowing users to store a vast amount of data even with a small system. Its future-proof design uses a standard Mini-ITX motherboard, 3.5 or 2.5-inch hard drives, and a standard ATX PS/2 power supply. The PC-Q25's thermal solution is a large 140-mm fan placed at the front panel for intake to push cool air through the HDD cage, and a 120mm exhaust fan at the top of the chassis.

The PC-Q25 has a removable HDD tray at the bottom of the cage that can mount either two 3.5" HDDs or one 3.5" HDD plus two 2.5" HDD, all add up to maximum of 8 hard drives. The chassis supports a video card that is 320mm long. The PC-Q25's dimensions are 199mm x 280mm x 366mm (W, H, D) and it weighs 3.1kg.

It seems that while the keyboard stood to make typing easier, its complex nature failed to impress and convince the makers to go through with it.

The whole concept of the keyboard was indeed neat but also complicated. The makers lost faith on the potential of the keyboard, a peripheral that is certainly not as hot compared to other ones we see in the market.

And while typing could have been easier, old habits are hard to beat. The idea may be welcome but if you take it all seriously, it is not an immediate need meaning techies could very well do with standard keyboards and not change them at all.

Oh well, its back to the old drawing board for the people behind the Miniguru Keyboard. Maybe a different idea would be great, something rare and of course mind-boggling!

viaUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24577524.post-50096501444748224942010-06-19T11:47:00.000-07:002010-06-19T11:48:56.709-07:00World’s Brightest LED Projector from NEC<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 227px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiqOjb1xAimEiMEjOCs1ozpWkVSBce-irxs3u1zYSg1xFawgvdCNw-y6_s6_3wx3VrhLUAhaGIoHHsI6uhjSM1Q9aiu3nESZ8ebIg_R9I-Q4fNgxqdE-VeKEDwtr6E7wGedNA5/s320/World's-Brightest'-LED-based-Projector-1-thumb-450x320.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5484558655258646562" />
Though it this NEC projector is not something we may see soon, it may yet be an idea for companies making projectors. The said NEC projector comes with a brightness count of 2,000 lumens and the ability to increase intensity as well.

It makes use of RGB color LEDs as a light source which is further brightened by multiple LED units that are used for each of the three colors. It can also display a wide color gamut of 98% as defined in Adobe’s standard TGB standard. Hopefully some good company does think of commercializing this soon. This is one projector that is sure to be a hit!

ReadUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24577524.post-80145646237732345352010-05-26T23:24:00.001-07:002010-05-26T23:25:10.158-07:00Computer Repair Firm Warns of PC Hacker Scam<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 167px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHUVi5HVCpHbv1vuC8wmfpk_r493JiCBVFM7RgsddT3TuXUJMox_U-OgiiRjOX5OYNnSBGK_0C75F_wul8raJLcsNZPC35HA_QLfGjVP0T7OW-U9Yyy4-qBwYiqt_wn7c4jMGH/s400/gI_0_customer2copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475832036355035666" />
The customer concerned had been called the night before by a "Microsoft Engineer" with a heavy Indian accent. The "engineer" told her that she had a problem with her computer that they had detected and they were calling up to help her. She was a little sceptical but followed their instructions.

They directed her to the System Log in Event Viewer and asked her if there were any errors. Indeed there were errors in the system log (as there almost always are). She was then directed to the Teamviewer website and asked to "Join a Session". At this point she became suspicious when they asked her for the username and password that Teamviewer had just presented her.

Had she given this username and password the "engineer" on the other end would have had full remote control of her PC and could have done almost anything such as installing a virus, removing her anti-virus or stealing all of the information on the PC. Potentially they could have installed a small piece of software called a key logger and monitored everything she did on her PC such as online banking.

ReadUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24577524.post-39843436925956619222010-05-21T03:36:00.000-07:002010-05-21T03:38:21.320-07:00Tega Tablet To Debut at CeBIT Australia<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 262px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaJEjNM99jzSPLTMuXQ93u_BnlVFKIfzU7Rw0g8fxB4dU_UZ98x3VqRLkHtCmLoiBOObJw1upnZelrmQj3vatSQ1N0b_oEydEPkf2dezCbL0nlvNtfHcuZaBcv9uinILpvZHGz/s400/TEGA_Product.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473670580404490562" />
Hugo Ortega is all set to launch a new tablet and it comes in the form of the Tega. And for now, all we can rely on is the CDMA version of the iPhone 4G which is being tested by Verizon Wireless. But you don’t have to fret since by June, official specs of the much anticipated iPhone 4G will most likely be released at the WWDC conference.

And so for now, we can just imagine what the new iPhone 4G would come out with. Rumors have it that it will have awesome features that include video chat, multi-tasking and extreme downloading. This iPhone 4g could also have dual core processors and higher and powerful graphic chips that can deliver higher video resolutions and better "still" images when taking pictures.

Well these are all speculations and while we don’t want to ruin the party, just wait and see. The iPhone 4G looks promising in terms of being sleek, packed with new hardware and multi-tasking software.

ReadUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24577524.post-21688945042241621792010-05-02T22:02:00.001-07:002010-05-02T22:03:28.700-07:00Verizon Unveils LG Fathom Windows Phone<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 119px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilZM5UX5gJ64P_-WtzhdznhZhVu-GKCIZ-KQstML3nk-1Oj0DjJEOgc5gy_cUfdaOPCLA-Xz4ADLczoegVX7fQ9vMe2QoUSqjRtvPWGpD1EbwQJW8DgHyBvZ2scVavCIwayn1I/s400/lgfathom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466904941221518978" />
Though unofficial, rumors are getting warm that Verizon Wireless will be releasing the LG Fathom Windows Phone. "Kindle DX is great for personal and professional documents, cookbooks and textbooks -- anything that is highly formatted," Amazon says.

It also now supports Adobe PDF files natively (Kindles previously needed to have these converted to a format it liked), so pre-formatted pages of text, images and diagrams involve significantly less messing about. Up to 3,500 books can be stored in memory, Amazon claims, and the battery should let you read for a full week without charging.

The Kindle DX for UK features the same built-in wireless bookstore as the standard Kindle, including free wireless downloads via the device's integrated 3G modem. Its screen -- which only requires power to turn pages, not to keep displaying them -- can generate 16 shades of grey. Sony's Readers, by contrast (ha), use just eight. This means images look far better on Kindles.

ReadUnknownnoreply@blogger.com3
