Lian Li Launches Full-tower PC-90

Keelung, Taiwan – Lian Li Industrial Co. Ltd, maker of high-end, all-aluminum computer chassis for over 12 years, today introduced a full-tower chassis, the PC-90. Available in striking black or silver hairline-brushed, anodized metal casing, the PC-90, also known as 'The Hammer', represents the best of Made-in-Taiwan ingenuity and quality, with the ease of tool-less design.

The Lian Li PC-90's unique internal layout allows large HPTX motherboards to be held in a standard, full-tower case with a weight of only 6.6kg. 'The Hammer' PC-90 is light and compact, and can easily fit under a desk like a standard PC chassis. This makes the chassis an excellent solution for systems/servers/workstations without needing a large, heavy steel case.

Instead of standard HDD cages that obstruct internal air-flow, the PC-90's HDD drives are mounted vertically on two trays inside the left side panel. This way, the entire back of the case can be used to hold the motherboard, even enabling a larger HPTX or server motherboard to fit into the standard, full-tower chassis.

The Lian Li PC-90 offers the advantage of two 140mm front fans blowing cool air directly and unrestricted over the motherboard and VGA card to the rear 120mm fan. Its sturdy HDD trays on the side of the case lock firmly into place in order to avoid vibration. Nonetheless, the trays can be easily removed via thumbscrew, allowing for easy installation of three 3.5” HDDs in the front and three more 2.5” drives on the back of the two trays, for a total of 12 HDD drives for the entire system. Thanks to the chassis design without HDD cages, 'The Hammer' supports video cards up to 400mm length and also offers a tool-less graphics card holder. To support modern motherboards and avoid having to use external connectors, the case is equipped with USB 3.0 for 20-pin connector.

Rounding out the Lian Li PC-90's superior features are its cable organization system and liquid cooling holes. Washable air filters offer easy-to-remove, and recyclable, computer protection.

Sony’s Ultra Thin Netbook

It’s thin, light and sexy, that’s what Sony’s VAIO X series has to offer. The latest new addition of Sony’s laptop has been shrunk to a minute size, its ultra thinner and lighter than the Apple’s Macbook Air. The new Sony VAIO series sports an Intel Atom processor that surely gives the creeps of the current generation netbooks.

To make it more enticing for those who are concerned with the specifications, let me tell you this that the motherboard of the X-Series has all the components glued into one side only making more room for the others and to make it even thinner as ever. Some of the components are tightly packed into the rear side of device to make the front half for only the battery.

With this, the Sony VAIO only measures just 16mm all throughout, which is much thinner than Apple’s Macbook Air. Sony has added a couple of drop-down legs at the rear, in the case when you neet to connect an Ethernet cable. Not to mention that the connection is much thicker than the laptop itself. The legs are also use to plug in an optional extended battery in which it makes the front of the laptop much thicker.

The keyboard is large and evenly spaced out giving you more room to type with ease. The touchpad is quite small though, but not to fret, it offers complete maneuverability with precise control.

The Sony VAIO, sports in with a 11.1-inch screen something that most of us would expect on a mid-range netbook. Surprisingly thought it’s not just an ordinary screen that most of its competitors have but it is rather unique than the rest. The screen is crystal clear, offering vibrant crisp images and excellent color reproduction. It’s far better than Apple’s Macbook Air and Lenovo’s ThinkPad X301. The screen resolution clocks in at 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, enabling you to make room for many applications and small windows alongside the screen.

It packs a Intel Atom processor rather a bit disappointing as we hope that they would put in the new Consumer Ultra Low Voltage processors. Enough said, the Atom is set to 2GHz and is powerful enough to do daunting office tasks.

The Sony VAIO is great, with its elegant and stylish design that makes us drool for more. It’s impossible not get attracted to this beauty. In a nut shell the new Sony VAIO X-Series is simply amazing and well rounded piece of machine.

MSI X-Slim notebooks

When the Apple MacBook Air was first released and unveiled to the world, everyone was astounded as to how thin and slim the entire piece of computing was. Even until today, you won’t find any other notebook coming close to the Apple MacBook Air, never mind the fact that it isn’t exactly powerful to be on par with the rest of the other MacBook Pros in Apple’s stable. Well, other notebook manufacturers did not waste the opportunity of seeing how the Air wowed first time viewers when it was unveiled, and MSI is among one of them to leverage on the lean theme with a couple of X-Slim notebooks. MSI will make available a couple of models to the masses in due time - the 14″ X-Slim X400 and the 15″ X-Slim X600, where both of them will be released sometime in Q2 this year.

Both the X-Slim X600 and X400 are record breakers in their respective categories, having taken top spot in lightness and thinness categories. This comes across as no surprise, thanks to the use of a super slim Li-poly battery in the 14″ X-Slim X400, making the entire notebook weigh no more than 1.5kg. As for the 15″ X-Slim X600, it is slightly heavier (obviously) with a similar battery, tipping the scales at a mere 2.1kg. Both of them are also less than an inch thick (or should we say, thin?), coming with 16:9 theater-class LED displays, full I/O ports, and Blu-Ray support. The beefier X600 is more entertainment oriented as it is also accompanied by a discrete graphic card to maximize visual performance.

There is no word on pricing for either machine,. but we do know that the X-Slim X400 will come with an optional 8 cell Long-endurance battery, while those who settle for the X600 can always opt for the slightly longer lasting 9 cell long-endurance battery. Both models have kept up with the times by adopting external ODD drivers that will further keep the X-Slim series notebooks slim and trendy.

The Heart Handbag Necklace USB Drive

Mother’s Day usually means tons of very cheesy and fairly cheap jewelry. Well if you are going to pick up some cheesy jewelry, it might as well be useful too. This heart necklace is probably more something a young kid would think their Mom would love, but sometimes moms still love this stuff. Moonlight Concept Laptop

I am guessing that this Moonlight Concept Laptop is named because of its shape. Granted, its crescent shape makes it a lot sexier than most laptops, and it has some other unique features as well.

For example, it doesn’t have two halves with one screen and one keyboard. No, both halves come with touchscreens. The bigger screen is a 16:9 that serves as the monitor, with the other is a smaller 4:3.

This lower 4:3 display has a screen that can be used like a touchpad mouse. It can also be used as an annex of the larger screen, or it can run mini OS.

You may have noticed that the frame lights up, and there are special sensors that will keep them on as long as the user wants, I imagine.

Yeah, this Moonlight looks pretty neat, and what you can barely see are special legs that lift it above the ground. Hopefully these legs fold up into the frame. Speaking of folding, the way the Moonlight folds up is quite unusual. You know how most laptops fold up so the screen is on the inside, and protected? Unfortunately, the Moonlight has its screen on the outside. This could be a problem.

Well, I can use my imagination to picture an age where every laptop is like the Moonlight. Somehow it looks really futuristic, like out of a science-fiction movie.

Tape Dispenser-4-port USB Hub

Although like many people I have tape tossed in the back of my desk drawer, some people use it more often. For those that do, it may end up staying out on your desk quite often. Then if you have to have a USB hub on top it, you’re slowly acquiring more and more clutter on your desktop. Viewsonic: All In One PC

The last time I reported on ViewSonic, I was at CES. I was quite impressed by their 3-D monitors and projectors, and I saw several other quality ViewSonic products while I was in Las Vegas. I believe that one of them was the All-In-One PC.

The VPC100 is designed to “operate independently, hardwired into a LAN network or work wirelessly in any 802.11 b/g WiFi network”. It has a 19-inch display that is very thin at 35mm. Inside is a built-in Intel Atom 1.6 GHz processor with Microsoft XP Home, as well as 1GB of RAM and 160GB HDD.

Other features include a 4-in-1 card reader, a DVD RW drive, 2×3 watt speakers for video conferencing and Internet browsing, an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam, and 4 USB 2.0 ports.

I believe that ViewSonic is marketing this product for those who need the space on their desk, and they also say it is perfect for schools. Sounds like a real winner on many fronts, and you also have to admire its sleek black look.

My sources do not say when the ViewSonic VPC100 will be released, and I am afraid that I don’t know the price either. I hope that the price will be brought down, as an inexpensive All-in-One PC could really make a killing in today’s market.

GPS navigation system save you gas

GPS manufacturer Navteq says it does. They recently released the results of a study that they had commissioned that show that drivers that have a navigation system used less fuel on an annual basis then drivers that don’t.

The problem is, because the Navteq paid for the study, you have to be a little cautious about their objectivity. Personally, I believe it. Having used a GPS satnav to travel long distances, I find that I can get from point A to point B much more efficiently than with a printed map or directions. Of course, on a daily basis the only real benefit would be if your GPS had traffic avoidance. But If you can avoid sitting and idling for long periods of time, you could save some fuel there as well.

Nintendo wii remote

To be quite honest, I’m surprised that it’s taken so long for someone to dig up the old patents for the Nintendo Wii Remote. Not that I’m the type to have gone digging for it, but the Wii has been out since ’06. Well, kudos to Siliconera for doing all the hard work on this one. Other patent images were found for the Classic Controller and Nunchuck, but the Wiimote seemed to have gone through most of the change. Spion’s Portable Voice Lie Detector

Lie Detection. Apparently, it is the latest thing. Just last week, we reported on the Truth Wristband, a device that can detect a user’s galvanic response to a question, and will glow in a proper color if he or she is telling the truth.

It would appear that Spion has created a Portable Lie Detector that works by detecting the tension in the suspect’s voice. The degrees of vibration are enough to reveal whether or not a suspect is calm when answering interrogation questions.

All you need to do is ask the Spion device three yes or no questions to record the voice and “establish a baseline”. Once you have that, you can have the suspect on his or her lies. The display devil’s nose and horns will grow when a fib is told.

Believe it or not, the Portable Lie Detector can be attached to a telephone, and you can actually ask your truth-revealing questions from a mobile phone as well.

I have heard that this device is not 100 percent accurate, but it is apparently more accurate than the polygraphs that the FBI uses. I believe I mentioned this before in the Truth Wristband article, but I’m not certain how accurate those wired polygraphs are.

USB Riff Rocker: Rock like a rockstar

What is it?
The Riff Rocker is essentially a USB controller for a game. You plug the little rocker into a free USB socket, download the two games off the Riff Rocker website, and then thrash your little fingers off.

The downloadable games come with the usual 3 difficulty settings and are based around the guitar heroes-esc format of “press the correct coloured button in time with the on screen prompt”.

Why do I want it?

Hear at GFM towers we love the Guitar Heroes series of games but have come to the conclusion that you could never really call them “portable”. This is where the Riff Rocker shines, as it is light enough to be transported by pocket and small enough to be easily hidden within a work desk.

As the games are downloadable you don’t need to worry about transporting any software and as long as the unit you plug it into has an internet connection, you will never be more than a couple of clicks away from getting your button bashing fix.

This makes it perfect for an impromptu lunchtime concert where you can wow your co-workers with your guitar fettling skills and shake off some of those office blues. Suitable for new comers and pros the Riff Rocker is easy enough to pick up and really difficult to put down.

When is the time to Upgrade your PC?

I have been using my Pentium 4 2.0 PC for over 5 years now and it makes me wonder, is it time to upgrade it? I have been seeing various new computers in the market today like the dual core Pentium processors and new memory chip modules. But while I am a real sucker for gadgets and computer stuff, the thought crossed my mind.

Performance wise, I am content with my computer as of to date. It helps me do the necessary things such as the usual word processing and spreadsheet things and some minor graphic designing details for offline everyday work. But when it comes to software requirements, sooner or later the hardware will need to be changed.

Price-wise, it seems reasonable to upgrade to a new one today. But one thing I am likewise considering is only getting a new CPU because my 15" Acer AL1706 LCD monitor can still be used.

Perhaps a little bit more of waiting. Technology changes fast and of all things I would hate is seeing new specifications after buying a new one just now. Well that’s technology for you!
