Logitech Rechargeable Cordless Mouse

The Logitech MX Air optical mouse tracks motion even after you lift it off the surface, making it great for home theater PC users and presentations. In the air, it works like a cross between a remote control and a wand as you simultaneously wave the mouse in all directions and press its buttons to navigate.

It sounds wieldy to use, but I was able to get the hang of it within a few minutes. Holding the mouse in my palm like a remote control, the cursor ably followed my hand movement but it got a little tricky trying to hone in on smaller icons and button selections. Another issue was I'd often catch myself in an awkward hand position while still needing the cursor to go in a certain direction. But with the freeze button, I could hold the cursor steady and recenter my hand into a more comfortable position.

For desktop use, optical sensitivity was comparable to other mice and picked up subtle movements, however the mouse did not have any side buttons that I am used to for back and forward browsing. The extra buttons (back, volume, play/pause) are placed in the middle of the mouse, which are easily accessible when you hold the mouse in the air, but not so much for desktop use because your palm sits directly over them. The SetPoint software can customize the buttons into functions that you may ordinarily use, such as copy and undo. I was also able to fine tune the cursor and scroll speed for even greater control.

The mouse definitely stands out on your desktop, its sleek black design might fool you into thinking it's something else, but upon touch the buttons light up to display each function. The shiny plastic casing doesn't feel cheap, but the smoothed look seems prone to scratches. The mouse also tracked up dirt pretty easily within a few days of use, however a cleaning cloth is provided. The smooth design is conspicuously missing a scroll wheel. That's because that section of the mouse is a touch panel sensor where you directly slide your finger up and down. It's a surprisingly comfortable and natural feel, and you start to wonder how you ever got by with wheels.

The rechargeable lithium ion battery typically provided about 20 hours of use. After placing the mouse onto the base charger, it took about two hours to reach a full charge. I was able to get a workable range of about 30 feet from the receiver before the signal went out. Overall, it's a nifty mouse that shows its stuff in the air, a convenient device for home theater PC's and couch browsing as well as a more versatile tool than a laser pointer in presentations. --Bradley Tran

The System

FujiFilm To Unveil New 3D Camera

Japan's FujiFilm is planning to add a new dimension to photography this year: the third dimension. In the battle to differentiate its products in the competitive digital camera market, the Japanese camera maker has been developing a model that features two identical lenses and image sensors. It snaps almost-identical images that are blended together by a custom chip to produce a 3D image, it said.

The system has been dubbed Real 3D by FujiFilm and can be used for both still images and movies. FujiFilm's system makes use of a 2.8-inch 3D LCD panel on the rear of the prototype camera so viewers don't need special glasses. For display of images the company has also come up with a prototype 3D photo frame that has an 8.4-inch display.

The prototype 3D camera first appeared at last year's Photokina show in Germany and recently made an appearance a the PMA show in the U.S. and Tokyo's Photo Imaging Expo. It's next step will be onto store shelves. FujiFilm plans to launch its first 3D camera in Japan later this year.

How to Install Windows XP and Remove Windows Vista

Windows Vista is not yet perfected and chances are you will reach the point where you want to revert to Windows XP. But the task is easier said than done especially if you want a clean copy of Windows XP on your PC. With that in mind, what can you do to uninstall Windows Vista and install Windows XP on your computer?

Well, I had that problem last week and much as I looked for solutions on the web, I discovered a different way to remove Windows Vista and install a fresh Windows XP operating system. How? Follow these steps.

1. Grab a hold of the usual bootable DOS disk. Some peripherals (particularly laptops) no longer come with the traditional floppy drives but not to worry. You can still download the DOS system from sites and burn them on a CD which you can use to boot. You can get a copy of DOS here.
2. Boot up your PC using the CD ROM as your first boot device. Allow it to load and then run the handy FDISK like before.
3. View the partitions on your hard drive and delete them one by one. Make sure you don’t leave any drive intact to make sure you get a RAW drive ready for formatting.

NOTE: As far as backups are concerned, this guide assumes that they have been already backed up or that the user wants to completely erase the Windows Vista OS.

4. After all partitions have been deleted or removed, place your Windows XP setup disk and restart the computer. Now you can install the Windows XP OS as you would in any first time setup.

Some people have tried to use the dual boot which is really ridiculous. For one, it eats up space and second why would you leave an operating system when you have no plans of using it. Some have even said that it causes problems so why leave it there in the first place?

Also, if at times you are attempting to overwrite Windows Vista, chances are your Windows XP setup will not even reach the first screen setup (blue screen). Such is the problem I had experienced that led me to find an alternative to which is itemized above.

These steps are guaranteed. Don’t let Windows Vista be a pain. You can outthink Windows Vista using the traditional way of formatting a computer, similar to the first time you install Windows XP.

Dell Computers is a known brand in the computer industry and just recently, they announced the unveiling of an entry-level server suitable for new businesses that are planning to implement technology in their everyday operations.

This will surely be welcome news to companies that are looking for budget-friendly solutions in the area of advanced systems and software solutions.

Dell on Monday launched single-socket servers for small and medium-size businesses, replenishing its overhauled PowerEdge line of servers.

The PowerEdge T300, with a tower chassis, and PowerEdge R300, a rack server, are designed to consume less power and include system management tools to better manage IT tasks, Dell said. The servers have quad-core Xeon processors and provide memory expandability and redundancy features, the company said.

Dual Core Processors and CPU Upgrade

They say they are the new kids on the block as far as new Pentium chip technology is concerned but my real question is up to when? I have been using my Pentium IV 2.0 for almost 5 years now and am pretty much satisfied. Aside from speed, can it handle my video editing software this time around?

These are questions in mind. I have been thinking of upgrading my computer and giving this PC to my wife’s cousin since he is taking up computer science today. While that would all depend on me, I guess I will pretty much buy the package I had made.

All I need are central processing unit (CPU) parts such as the processor, memory and motherboard if you think about it. Although being the computer geek I am, I put in a higher video card (1 gig I think!) and a 160 gigabyte hard drive as well as a brand new DVD writer to go. It is going to cost somewhere around the price of $300.00 just for those specs. I don't need a monitor since I still have my ACER AL1706 LCD monitor to use.

I think it is a wise investment considering online and telecommute work is now my main cup of tea. So if you want to get better results, chances are you have to be equipped with good equipment to support your work.

What I hate really is having to re-install everything. From the operating system to the other applications I need, its going to be a long day for me to get everything back together. This also includes transferring my thousands of files to it.

The OS? I think I will stick it out with Windows XP for now. While it can support the new Windows Vista operating system, I will cross the bridge when I get there.

We get this a lot and they do sound too good to be true. Apparently they ask for your personal information such as your name, address, phone number and bank account number. If you want some clean advice on this, it is quite simple…DON’T!

Your information is valuable and perhaps just a means to be used for mischief and no good. Based on what I have read on these emails, here are some things to consider to which you can just delete that message or trash it. Don’t waste your time!

1. Check for Grammar. Normally they are poor at this. Don’t know though if they are really from where they are but it seems like it.
2. You don’t win anything if you don’t enter any contest
3. There is no such thing as Instant Millionaires
4. Be wary of questionable origins of email
5. Be wary of links. Do not click on it.
6. People asking for your personal information
7. Check out the Subject. Normally it is something too good to be true

Performance wise, I am content with my computer as of to date. Price-wise, it seems reasonable to upgrade to a new one today. But one thing I am likewise considering is only getting a new CPU because my 15" Acer AL1706 LCD monitor can still be used.

Switching from CRT to LCD Monitors

But once I got back home, it took me only 24 hours to use my old AOC CRT monitor and it got busted as quickly as I used it. While I remember what my friend told me, I needed a monitor badly since I had a lot of pending jobs in the form of article writing and blog entries to catch up on. My solution? What else but to buy a new monitor. Apparently, it was the Christmas Rush so I really had problems of transporting a large CRT monitor to my car as parking was really a drag.

I came across this Samsung SyncMaster 740N LCD monitor which I bargained until I could afford it. I ended up getting one for $200.00. If I got one in Taiwan, I would have gotten it for $150.00! Nevertheless I just considered it as a Christmas gift for myself. Besides, its been a while since I bought something worthwhile, and being able to buy my very own LCD monitor has its fulfillment in a way.

The prices once known are really sure to hit the roof, and despite this, people still get them, serving notice and conflict to the known belief that most people are having a hard time coping up with their standard of living due to economic recession in various parts of the world.

But just the same, as long as the demand is present, there is no reason for them to hold back manufacturing but rather satisfy the demand for such electronics and technological driven items today.

For most marketing people today, sudden interests and stirring up of product or service information, the mechanics and the entire process for such need to be given due allowance for sudden requests for informative insights through presentation materials, reading materials and an in-depth overview of the entire venture. Remembering Ultima Online Philippines: The Filipino Shard

If there is one thing that I cannot forget is my drive in 2003 of putting up this Online Game which was introduced to my by my best friend in 2001, Ultima Online. For me, this was the very first online game that really caught my fancy, most of the time spending long hours, and not shutting down my computers just to make my characters strong, mostly merchant developed ones. Unlike most typical players who would wander out, adventure and fight off monsters, my approach to the game was more of a business minded one. Why shouldn’t it be considering that most games can be looked upon as business related rather than fantasy and adventuring people?

My role here was to make the game totally interesting. I get to play God in a way, trying to balance good and evil. I will admit, I was after justice in all aspects, becoming a game that most people wanted to make a real true to life game where the people such as robbers, murderers and slayers would exist equally with the common players who would just want to fight off Non-Playing Characters (NPC’s). The game proper was really amazing, creating monsters with powers that can totally annihilate anyone with one blow, magic and other combat related skills. Anyone can practically mold their characters as legends in their own right.

There is nothing much to argue other than maintaining such a game, considering server hosting, scripting and other expenses are the main reasons for my closing it down some time ago. Players as well were inclined to try out new games that offered high graphics, something that attracted and lured out players one by one. Dwindling numbers, conflicts of interests, the game was made popular by the players and not by the Game Masters as some would claim. Playing God in the game was not even an enjoying moment, especially when you see people arguing and cursing each other, it was just simply a game that many had really taken by heart. That alone is a testimony that such a game gets the better of most RPG addicts. It simply means a lot to them when they get into the game.

Free gaming will not last long. Maintenance requirements are a reality and to keep a shard up is no big joke. The problem is, most of us are accustomed to freebies and this will simply reach a point where most people will consider stopping and just lean towards other game related sites that offer better qualities and so. But seeing this, having seen the article I wrote about Ultima Online Philippines in Manila Bulletin, the interview I had on television through Knowledge Power, the original site, forums, and the times I have had with the players online, as always, I treasure such experiences. I have no regrets of trying to put up that game despite the odds and the hardships, but facing reality with the manner on how to maintain such a game online requires funds, something that most people did not understand then, but do now.

No Mouse? Use the Shortcut Keys

Unknown to many, the earlier versions of computers made do without a mouse. The use of a plain keyboard was the original concept of most computers in the early 90’s, and until the birth of Microsoft Windows 95 was the need for a mouse called for to ease the interface that most people enjoy today.

For the earlier computer literate individuals, everyone was familiar with the various short cut keys. Such short-cut keys are really logical first letters. Paired with the CTRL key, they could practically do anything. Some of the easier shortcut keys are:

• CTRL + C – Copy
• CTRL + P – Print
• CTRL + F – Find or Search
• CTRL + S – Save
• CTRL + V – Paste
• CTRL + B – Bold Letters
• CTRL + I – Italic Letters
• CTRL + U – Underline
  

These keys are easier for Microsoft Office products, especially in Word and Excel. For the more seasoned users, they find no need to resort towards the icons beneath the menu of the programs, especially if they already know what shortcut keys to use.

Some have gone to the extent of even being available in most products and web interfaces such as blogs from Word Press. To sum it all up, familiarization is really the key and how it will stick in the memory of people shall make life a whole lot easier for them when they use a computer and enjoy the powers that each machine has. The entirety of it all is right before us, the matter of how to explore and discover them lies in our interest for them.

Friendster Requests: Is It Impolite to Reject Friend Requests?

Everyone is sure to be familiar by now by this thing called Friendster. Friendster is a concept that is fascinating and a lot have followed its lead, like Multiply, Hi-5, Pinoyster and MySpace. A networking type of scheme where you can find old and new friends from the past, both memorable and unforgettable acquaintances, this craze is something that has hit the various nations today, particularly in the states of the United States, Europe, and Asia. For sure, the developers of this Friendster website never thought that such a concept would be this much in demand, something that has forced them to find ways of keeping their market leading ways above the up and coming network building techniques by most people who have seen the promise that such a concept brings.

To add people in a subscriber’s friends list, proper friend request permissions are sent out prior to actually adding them. For authentication purposes, a feature wherein verification if such people are really acquainted are asked such as the e-mail address, first name and last name, to preserve the privacy that most people have. For others, the option of allowing anyone on the Internet to see their profile and adding them as they wish is also made available. All these features are optional and can be set before and during the account subscription, which also happens to be free!

There was a time where Friendster limited the number of friends that one account had to only 500 friends. For most people, 500 is already a lot, hence forcing them to open up another account to be able to accommodate other friends who they may have not included in their list yet. While this was a good way to increase the subscriber database, it also meant having to consider the other factors such as hardware and software for the entire site as well. Storage, bandwidth and other factors needed an upgrade to accommodate such growth of this new fad, and this is certainly something that most successful ventures need to be open to. The limit by the way was eventually lifted, and people could add as many friends as they wished.

The trend continues today for Friendster. Its popularity increasing by the day and acquiring new members as its flourishes. It has made a marquee trademark for most people, and has even expanded the options they can do towards Blogging, profile enhancement using videos and music, testimonials and background enhancements all according to the member’s liking as far as expressing themselves.

Friendster has been successful and the only that perhaps they should take into consideration is their ability to accommodate the growing number of members, the load of data that they will have to carry and also the privacy concerns of most of its valued members. Friendster has allowed the people to express themselves, show off who they really are but perhaps stricter measures as far as display of pictures, which they stress as something that should not be obscene or has copyrights be used. Small as it may seem, perhaps it would be better for them to start monitoring these activities, as they may find themselves in unwanted legal issues which may lead to conflicts and problems not only with the laws that govern it, but with the people who actually hold rights to as far as pictures are concerned.
